In previous posts, we’ve discussed the care and maintenance of indoor granite countertops and features. This time, we’re going outside to look at the care and maintenance of outdoor granite countertops and features.

GRANITE IS IDEAL FOR OUTDOOR USE

Granite’s strength, durability, and striking appearance make it an ideal outdoor construction material. Granite can withstand just about any adverse weather, including wind, rain, snow, Summer heat, and harsh sunlight. They provide a versatile choice for outdoor landscaping and hardscaping design. In addition to countertops, granite is used for:

  • Benches
  • Patios and pavers
  • Edging
  • Flooring
  • Steps and stairs
  • Walls and retaining walls
  • Fountains and water features
  • Columns and pillars
  • Barbeque and fire pits
  • Building facades

Like indoor granite, outdoor granite is relatively low maintenance. However, outdoor granite is exposed to harsh environmental conditions, including rain, mud, dust, direct sunlight, animal droppings, tree litter, and more. This means outdoor granite surfaces may need to be cleaned more often than indoor ones.

TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR OUTDOOR GRANITE SURFACES IN BEST CONDITION

To avoid stains and damage, wipe up any spills and remove any debris from the granite as soon as possible.

Outdoor granite needs to be cleaned regularly. Sweep away dirt and debris, and gently clean the granite with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Don’t use harsh chemicals, such as bleach ammonia, or citrus-based cleaners as these can stain and damage a granite surface

Granite is porous and can absorb liquids and stains. Having your outdoor granite sealed on an annual basis can help protect it from damage. Here’s a simple test to determine if it’s time to have your outdoor granite countertops resealed: drip a little bit of water onto the countertop and wait a few minutes. If the water beads up, then your seal is secure; on the other hand, if the water soaks into the rock and leaves a stain, it’s time to have the countertop resealed.

Remove any weeds or moss growing between stones.

Although durable, granite can still develop cracks and chips they may need to be repaired by a professional.

SHOULD I HIRE A GRANITE MAINTENANCE PROFESSIONAL?

Most homeowners can handle day-to-day cleaning chores. However, there are some instances where the services of a granite cleaning professional can be helpful. This includes resealing a granite surface or repairing cracks and chips. Professional granite maintenance and repair technicians have the training, tools, and materials to do the job right.
